Last week I volunteered to help welcome the IOC to London for their inspection of plans for the 2012 Games. I was helping as part of the 'PVP' ('Pre Volunteer Programme') pilot scheme, which I heard about through Age Concern Hackney and the Hackney Silver

My role was to stand by the ticket barriers and greet the Olympic Committee when they arrived. I showed the group through the gate and directed them to the escalators. It was all over very quickly but thoroughly enjoyable!

As a thank you for helping out at the event we got a special tour of the new Dome facilities. We had to put on safety shoes and helmets- as they are still constructing the building.

We had a guided tour around the building, and we got to see the stadium - which is gigantic. The Stadium will be used for gymnastics, basketball and ice hockey. We were told that it will take 4 days to build up the ice for the ice hockey.

I think the 2012 Games is going to be awesome! And I really want to be part of it. Volunteering with PVP has opened my eyes to what it is going to be like in the real thing.
