Kazzum was commissioned by Shape to produce 'Paper People' - a new mobile, street theatre work for young audiences inspired by the London 2012 Olympics. Paper People is based around a mobile newspaper stand, where performers manipulate their papers to tell the smaller tales within the BIG story that is the Olympics. Where a paper woman plants seeds at night, paper animals escape from a circus and a paper boy spots a strange object in the sky.
'Paper People' creates an opportunity for fun and creative interaction between disabled artists and young people, inspiring not only the young people's interest in the arts, but also inspire them to view disability and diversity in a new light.
Being awarded this commission was a great opportunity to explore a new world of outdoor street arts, a way for us to get our work seen by new audiences, a chance for us to take our work outside of theatres and onto the streets. The commission has enabled us to create a new piece of work that has a long life span and a legacy both financially and artistically as 'Paper People' continues to tour and develop throughout 2009 and 2010.
As a company based in Tower Hamlets it was important for us to connect with 2012 and this commission was a great vehicle to do so. Through this process we have begun to explore and collaborate to produce larger outdoor work ready for London 2012 and be part of that big story ourselves.
