Winning the award recognises the enormous challenge we have overcome in cleaning up 2.5 square kilometres of contaminated land to prepare for the construction of the Olympic Park, in an environmentally sustainable manner.
Since July 2007, 190 buildings have been demolished, 80% of the site has been cleared, and over 1 million cubic metres of soil excavated, with preparation of the Olympic Stadium and Aquatics sites delivered three months early.
We have used sustainable treatment technologies, minimising disposal to landfill and recovering materials for re-use within the project.
The standard of competition in the awards was extremely high. Our work was assessed alongside the largest names in UK remediation, with 55 entries submitted across eight categories.
We were assessed on a range of criteria including; reduction of the pollution burden, representing best practice, cost effectiveness, durability, and long term environmental benefits.
The dedication of the entire London 2012 team who have delivered the remediation has raised the bar, with the work completed exceeding industry standards.
This remediation work provides the foundations for a sustainable legacy, and we can look forward to the creation of the largest urban park in Europe for more than 150 years, housing world-class facilities for the Games and for the community.
