I started high jump when was 13 and have been dreaming big ever since I won my first medal at a school competition. Early successes at the English Schools Championships sparked a desire to be the very best and I vowed not to stop until I reached my full potential.

Since high jumpers tend to reach their peak in their mid to late 20s, this means that I’m in it for the long haul, being only 19 at the moment! Sport has taken me on an incredible journey so far and I’ve learned so much along the way – as well as meeting some inspirational people and visiting many exciting places.

The London 2012 Games have given British sport a huge boost in general, as well as providing valuable support for thousands of aspiring athletes and current sporting stars. It goes without saying that it would be a dream come true to compete in the London 2012 Games – in fact it is almost every athlete’s dream to compete at a home championships!

However, my sporting journey promises many more exciting competitions on the horizon. If everything goes to plan, I hope to be in the running for the World Athletics Championships 2017 in London – now that really would be a dream scenario!

A fantastic opportunity

I am very lucky to have been chosen as a Lloyds TSB Local Hero for the last two years and I am so grateful for the support I have received so far. This has made training financially possible for the last 14 months and even funded a training camp abroad in 2011. More importantly, I am fortunate to be among an elite group of athletes from a wide range of sports and to have attended two invaluable Local Heroes Workshops.

The workshops are tailored to equip the Local Heroes with the knowledge and skills to be a successful sportsperson and also provide a unique opportunity to learn from each other. Another often overlooked benefit of the Local Heroes Scheme is the boost to self-belief that comes from being supported by Lloyds TSB. It really makes a difference to know that someone (apart from your family and coach) believes in your ability and wants to help you to achieve your goals.

Olympic Stadium event

Now, back to the pressing matter of this summer, one of the most highly anticipated years in recent British history! In just a few weeks I will have the unique honour to compete for my university at the BUCS Outdoor Athletics Championships in the Olympic Stadium. This is a terrific chance to experience the venue first-hand and I’m filled with excitement to jump in front of a big crowd.

I can’t wait to see what this summer has in store for me – it certainly promises to be an exciting year. With any luck, my dedication and commitment to training will pay off and I might be donning a GB vest come August!
