Members of Barcelona University, a recognised institution of Olympic-related studies, came over to give London 2012 staff and our partners a presentation on how a Host City is perceived by the rest of the world through the broadcast of their Handover Cere

From the presentation I learnt that a segment of the Handover Ceremony is completely run, put together and shot by the future Host Cities and their broadcast partners. This means that whole teams have to go over well in advance to get preparations underway. Television broadcasts - in particular camera shots and angles, commentary and editing - have a big impact on how a city looks – two broadcasters can represent the same Ceremony entirely differently.

Different countries use many different techniques when devising their Handover Ceremony. For some it’s all fireworks and song, for others it’s acrobatics and dance. They all put their best on show to make the strongest parts of their country’s offer and heritage come alive. It’s all about making a memorable impact but they only have about eight minutes to do it in!

Ceremonies incorporate so much - they are big, colourful, entertaining and get everyone excited.  The Handover Ceremonies in particular need to whet the public’s appetite and leave them in anticipation for what lies ahead in the four years leading up to their Opening Ceremonies. I can’t wait for ours – I know they are going to be truly memorable.
