I was part of a group of National Olympic Committees (NOCs) that visited London on Friday for the inaugural LOCOG NOC Open Day. The group consisted of delegates from all five continents – from Ireland to Kazakhstan, Brazil to Zambia.

It’s tricky fitting so much information into one day especially when plans are as detailed and advanced as they are for London, but we all came away brimming with confidence about all aspects of their Games preparation. As a former athlete, I found the Village section particularly interesting. In London the athletes will be close to the venues as well as the local amenities and I for one think this will be a bit hit.

After hearing from most of the functional areas that make up the Organising Committee, we headed off to lunch in a restaurant which overlooks the Olympic Park site. Afterwards we were given a tour of not only the venues which are under construction (and looking fabulous!) but the Village which will be home to our athletes during their stay in London.

After going to the Park we made our way to ExCeL which is an existing multi-sport venue in the so-called River Zone. We haven’t seen all the other venues yet, but it really impressed me how compact everything is. I don’t think we were expecting that.

With 3 years to go, it’s easy to imagine just how spectacular these Games are going to be. London has all the ingredients of a great host city – world class venues, iconic backdrops and it’s also international enough to provide a home team for all that compete here. Having made some good contacts here today, we look forward to coming back again, and obviously going back to Ireland in 2012 laden with medals.
