This morning I joined hip hop artists Ms Dynamite and Akala; a beach volleyball player; BP representatives; and a host of others for a ballet class at the English National Ballet, to kick off Open Weekend 2009. We've got 750 different events over the cour

I think Open Weekend is a great thing showing people that the Games aren't just about 16 days of Olympic or Paralympic sport. It's really an opportunity for people to participate and to do things that they wouldn’t normally dream of. I wouldn't normally be coming to a ballet class on a working day.

Whereas last year we had a focus on cultural and artistic events, this time that focus has been broadened to include sport. Some of those events actually are involving sport alongside things like ballet, or whatever it happens to be under the same roof.

I'm hoping people will understand that this is a fantastic opportunity. In London, there's hip-hop on the South Bank, there's beach volleyball in Barking. The Organising Committee are north, south, east, and west today, from Scotland down to Plymouth, witnessing the extraordinary things that are happening.

Somebody that walks through the doors of these events, who's never thought of doing this before, could well end up being a dancer, or a sportsperson, or whatever they discover. They'll be inspired by London 2012...it's what we're all about.
