Cycling, recycling and reusing for Team Green Britain
Verity, LOCOG Sustainability Coordinator
Working in the Sustainability Team at London 2012, conscious of leading a sustainable lifestyle, choosing what action I was going to take as part of EDF Energy's Green Britain Day was quite a challenge. Some may say that it's not what you do on one day, it

There are five teams that currently make up Team Green Britain. Each team has a different focus, from more sustainable travel (Team A to B), saving energy (Team Energy), promoting reuse of items (Team Swap), engaging with your local community and supporting local producers (Team Big Lunch) through to living more sustainable lifestyles in general (Ecoteams).

So, not shy of a challenge, I joined all five teams.

Thinking of an action I could take and keep taking from today, Green Britain Day, wasn't the easiest task, and I ended-up opting to take various sized steps for each team. I figured this was something that everyone deciding what team to join must be going through, and what tempted me to share my experience. In some areas of my life it is possible for me to take larger steps than others.

I have to admit, my role at London 2012 enabled me to take the biggest steps.  At work, we've organised:

1) A clean-up of the banks of the River Thames with our friends from Thames 21 tomorrow.

2) Swapping our shopping @ London 2012 HQ. It's truly amazing looking at all the items already brought in for our swap shop. How much we buy that we think we will use that we never actually do, the number of items people only use once, is astonishing. I'm personally surprised at how much 'junk' I had to offer others!

My other actions? As a keen sportsperson, it was only natural that I take steps to cycle more. Having moved home recently, I am using the big lunch (19 July) as an opportunity to get to know my neighbours over some local produce.

What action will you take for a more sustainable Britain?
