Last Friday we announced the winners of the design for the Central Park Bridge - the main pedestrian footbridge in the Park. The process actually started back in May this year, with interviews with the shortlisted candidates taking place in September.The
Days like these are few and far between. Ultimately the visions and intellectual strength of the proposals that these design teams delivered was immensely powerful. It was a privilege to be there. HParc (short for Henghan Peng Architects), with structural engineers ABK, presented last. They are a dynamic team and presented a scheme that sculpts a form in the landscape. As you can see from the concept design, it has fantastic potential for future use in legacy and is celebratory in Games mode offering the potential for a brightly coloured lit deck that changes colour and look depending on the events taking place:
In legacy it will create the type of space where people will meet, where the park connects to the river and the tow paths, where the landscape can form a natural amphitheatre and where it is easy to imagine that new future uses such as performances and events will occur:
As Shih-Fu and Roisin reached the end of their presentation the energy in the jury room seemed to surge. We are all delighted that we will be working to develop such a stunning proposal over the coming year.
