Bell rings for London 2012 Boxing qualification
Matt, LOCOG Boxing Manager
This weekend will see the first five male boxers qualify for the London 2012 Olympic Games. However, they will not be following the traditional route via qualification from a World Championships or Continental Qualifier.

Instead, the five individual champions of the inaugural World Series Boxing in Guiyang, China will receive a guaranteed place at the Games next year, along with $20,000 prize money.

London 2012 hopes to emulate the Boxing event of the Beijing 2008 Games

It promises to be a very exciting event with extremely high stakes, and we at the London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG) look forward to knowing the names of the first five qualifiers for Boxing.

The remaining 281 Olympic qualification places will be decided at the following events:

  • AIBA male World Championships (Baku, Azerbaijan, September 2011)
  • Continental Olympic Qualification Events (One event per continent, March - May 2012)
  • AIBA female World Championships (QingHuandao, China, May 2012)

In the meantime, LOCOG are continuing with the planning stages of our very own Boxing 'Invitational Event', which will take place at ExCeL between 24 and 27 November 2011.

We will shortly be issuing invites to 20 leading boxing nations from around the globe, inviting 104 athletes (80 male and 24 female) to compete in the 13 Olympic Weight categories (10 male and three female). Up to 70 International Technical Officials will also be put through their paces at this event prior to their selection for the Games by the International Federation.

This event is part of the London Prepares series and will allow LOCOG to test key areas such as technology, workforce roles, athlete flows, sport equipment and the Field of Play.

With the Games now just 14 months away, the test event will be crucial in ensuring we are right on track for the moment the bell rings in the first bout at London 2012.
