York to host The Gambia in run up to the Games

08 Jun 2010
York was celebrating yesterday after officials put the finishing touches to an agreement that will see Gambian athletes use the city as a training base for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Representatives from City of York Council and Active York (the city’s sport and leisure partnership) were joined by Lawrence Bruce, Executive Director of the National Olympic Committee for Gambia.

Together, they took a tour of the venues awarded Pre-Games Training Camp status by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG). After enjoying lunch at York Mansion House, Bruce signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Councillor Nigel Ayre.

Seb Coe, LOCOG Chair, said: ‘This is great news for York. The excellent sporting facilities in York will help the Gambian team train and prepare well for the London Games. It will also lead to a strong relationship between Yorkshire and The Gambia, and the development of sporting and cultural ties.’
