Skanska has been appointed to transform the area, which most people will use to enter the Park.

Its work will also focus on retaining the vibrant spirit of the Games, by developing riverside gardens and areas for markets, events, cafes and bars to be used after 2012.

On track to start in the new year, the work will also include the delivery of the London 2012 Garden. This will stretch for half a mile between the Aquatics Centre and Olympic Stadium and celebrate centuries of British passion for gardens and plants.

The contractor will also deliver the Great British Garden, which two amateur gardeners are helping to design after their competition entries won a public vote.

ODA Chief Executive David Higgins said: ‘We are on track to create the green backdrop for the London 2012 Games that in legacy will become the UK’s largest new urban park in more than a century. Trees are being planted, wetlands dug and cleaned soil formed into the hills, meadows and lawns which will be planted for the new parklands.’
