Spectators will use West Ham Station to reach the south of the Olympic Park

The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) has received planning permission to carry out temporary work at West Ham Station to get it ready for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

West Ham is one of the ‘gateway’ stations to the Olympic Park, along with Stratford Regional and Stratford International Station.

The temporary work will ensure the station can cope with Games spectators travelling to the Olympic Park on the District and Hammersmith & City Lines, while also allowing regular commuters to follow their usual route through the station with minimal disruption.

As part of this work, a temporary footbridge will be built to take passengers directly from the District and Hammersmith & City Lines platforms to the front of the station. It will mean spectators do not have to pass through the station itself, minimising congestion.

Spectators will then make their way along The Greenway, an off-road walking and cycling path, to the southern entrance of the Olympic Park.

Work at West Ham Station will begin next year. It will remain fully operational while the works are carried out.

ODA Transport Director Hugh Sumner said: ‘Our plans will make sure that spectators, regular commuters and residents alike can safely use West Ham Station, avoiding unnecessary congestion. Securing planning permission for these works is an important step towards keeping people moving at this key station in 2012.’
