Figure skating and gymnastics: what's the link?

I can't believe there are only a few days left of the Vancouver Winter Olympics – I've really enjoyed watching all the action over the last 10 days or so and cheering on Team GB. They’ve all performed brilliantly and Amy Williams’ gold was the icing on the cake so far!

Whilst I enjoy watching all winter sports, I have to say that the one I have a particular soft spot for is the figure skating. I really enjoyed the performances from Sinead and John Kerr and Penny Coomes and Nick Buckland yesterday – they all did fantastically well, achieving seasonal bests.

Seeing the skaters attempting jumps such as lutzes and axels or very technical lifts is always so impressive. They look so graceful doing them and yet need such strength to make their landing.

In some ways, figure skating is very similar to my sport, artistic gymnastics. Like in gymnastics, skaters require a good technical and artistic base as well as some serious confidence. These skills are something that I need when I'm going into my tumbling passes and series of jumps, in the floor event.

I'll be cheering Jenna McCorkell on tonight as she competes in the ladies short programme. This is her Olympic debut so I’m sure she’ll be feeling nervous but she’s got a fantastic track record, winning the British title seven times. I know she’ll dazzle on the ice-rink! And if you miss her tonight, she’ll be competing again in the ladies free skating event on Thursday.

Jenna's sporting motto is 'never let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game'. This is something I completely believe in and try and apply in my own life.
